…Using a potter's wheel, the centrifugal force of the rotational motion can be used to carve the shape of a vessel from a lump of clay. There are several methods of making pottery without using a potter's wheel: (1) making a depression in the center of a lump of clay with your fingers and gradually thinning the walls around it to form the shape of a vessel (hand kneading); (2) stacking clay strings or flattened clay strips into a ring (washi) or spiral (hogashi) to form the shape of a vessel (himozukuri); and (3) preparing the lower half of an existing pottery, a basket, or a special mold, and pressing the clay against the inside of it to form the shape of a vessel (kataokoshi).
