Polar front - Polar front

A large front that forms at the boundary between polar air masses and tropical air masses. Many extratropical cyclones occur on this front. In addition, because they often develop along this front as they pass, areas where this front is climatically prone to form, such as around Japan, experience large changes in weather. In winter, the polar air mass is stronger than in summer, so the polar front moves south. Above the polar front, there is a jet stream called the polar front jet stream that runs almost parallel to the front.

寒帯気団と熱帯気団との境目にできる大規模な前線。温帯低気圧の多くはこの前線上で発生する。また、この前線上を発達しながら通過することが多いため、日本付近のようにこの前線が気候的にできやすい所では、変化の大きい天候が現れる。冬季は夏季に比べ寒帯気団の勢力が強いために、寒帯前線は南に下がる。寒帯前線の上空にはこの前線にほぼ平行に寒帯前線ジェット気流とよばれるジェット気流が存在している。
