Spanish politician and physiologist. After returning from Germany, where he had studied, in 1918, he joined the Socialist Party and was a member of the moderate faction. He entered politics in 1929 and was first elected to parliament in 1931. He became Minister of Finance in September 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. He became Prime Minister in May 1937 and maintained close ties with the Communist Party, prioritizing victory in the civil war. After the war, he traveled to France and Britain, where he led an anti-Franco movement as the head of a government in exile. He died in Paris in 1956. After his death, the Spanish government demanded the Soviet Union return gold held by the Bank of Spain that he had sent to the Soviet Union during his term in office, sparking a dispute between the two countries.

スペインの政治家，生理学者。1918年留学先のドイツから帰国した後，社会党へ入党し，党内穏健派に属した。29年政界に入り，31年国会議員に初当選。内戦中の36年9月大蔵大臣となった。37年5月首相に就任すると，内戦の勝利を第一として共産党と密接な関係を維持し続けた。内戦後はフランスおよびイギリスへ渡り，亡命政権の首班として反フランコ運動を展開し，56年パリで死去した。死後，彼が在任中にソ連へ送ったスペイン銀行保有の金に関して，スペイン政府はソ連へその返還を要求したため両国間に論議が起こった。
