Hans Jürgen Eysenck

German-born British psychologist. His research into neuroses during World War II attracted attention. In 1955 he became a professor at the University of London and headed the psychology laboratory at the Maudsley Hospital. His works include The Art of Self-Discovery (1976), which combined factor analytic research into personality with European personality typology. He is also known for developing psychological tests and behavioral therapy as methods of clinical psychology. At the International Congress of Psychology (Montreal) in 1996, he caused a stir by reporting, as the result of a long-term study on smoking and lung cancer, that there was no simple causal relationship, and that there was a correlation with cancer only through the mediation of stress.

ドイツ生まれのイギリスの心理学者。第二次世界大戦中の神経症の研究が注目された。1955年ロンドン大学教授になり、モーズレイ病院の心理学研究室の主任となった。パーソナリティーに関する因子分析的研究とヨーロッパの性格類型学を結び付けた『自己発見の方法』（1976）がある。心理学臨床の方法として、心理テストや行動療法を開発したことでも知られる。1996年の国際心理学会（モントリオール）で、喫煙と肺癌(がん)に関する長期的研究の成果として、その単純な因果関係を否定し、ストレスの介在によってのみ癌との相関があることを報告して話題になった。
