An ancient kingdom located in southern Dagestan in the southeastern Caucasus and in Azerbaijan, now part of the Soviet Union. The main inhabitants, the Albanians, spoke a Caucasian language. By the end of the 1st millennium BC, the inhabitants of this region had a culture that included ploughing, pasture-raising, various crafts, and rock painting (Khobustan). In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, they formed a state with its capital in Kavala. In the 1st century BC, they fought against the Roman army of Pompey, who had reached the Kur River. Feudal relations were formed in the 3rd to 5th centuries, but it was around this time that Christianity was made the state religion, and an independent Catholic Province of Albania was established.
