Russian Narodnik revolutionary. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vilnius County, he entered medical school. He participated in student activism and was arrested many times, but in 1871, together with NV Tchaikovsky and others, he founded the so-called Tchaikovsky Circle for self-improvement. This became the basis for the revolutionary Narodnik movement of the 1870s. He was arrested and exiled soon after, but returned to St. Petersburg in 1876 and led the founding of the secret society Land and Freedom. He was arrested in 1877 and exiled to Yakutsk, but returned from Siberia in 1889, lived in Saratov, and founded the People's Rights Party in 1893.

ロシアのナロードニキ革命家。ビリニュス県の裕福なユダヤ人の家に生まれ，医科大学に入学した。学生運動に加わってしばしば逮捕されたが，1871年，N.V.チャイコフスキーらとともに自己形成のための，いわゆるチャイコフスキー派サークルをつくる。これは1870年代の革命的ナロードニキ運動の母体をなした。早々に逮捕され，流刑されたが，76年にはペテルブルグに戻り，秘密結社〈土地と自由〉の創立を主導した。77年逮捕，ヤクーツクへ流されたが，89年シベリアから戻り，サラトフに住んで，93年〈人民の権利〉党を創立した。
