Emanuel‐Eugène Mermet (de) Cachon
1828-70?
French missionary. His real name was Mermet Cachon, but in Japan he added the surname "de" to his name and went by Mermet de Cachon, and signed his name as Kazuharu. Born in a remote village in the Jura mountains, he joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society in 1852. He traveled to Japan in 1854 and learned Japanese in Naha, Okinawa, and came to Japan in 1858 (5th year of the Ansei era) as an interpreter for Baron Gros, the Japanese envoy to France. However, after the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and France was concluded, he resigned due to disagreements with the first French envoy to France, Bellecourt. The following year, he traveled from Hong Kong to Shanghai, Nagasaki, and then to Hakodate, where he set up a priest's house in the Shomyoji temple and opened a private school where he taught French.
