Tokoro ruins
<br /> The remains of a settlement thought to be about 1800 years old, located in Tokoro Town, Kitami City, Hokkaido. It is located on a sand dune about 300m wide and 2.7km long that runs from the mouth of the Tokoro River along the Okhotsk coast to the west shore of Lake Saroma. There are more than 2000 pit dwellings and many small pits that are thought to be tombs, mainly from the Late Jomon, Satsumon , and Okhotsk culture periods. Pit dwellings that are not completely buried and leave depressions on the ground are particularly common from the northern Tohoku region to Hokkaido, and the Tokoro ruins are one of the largest and most densely populated of them all. Since excavation in 1957 (Showa 32), the remains of about 2500 pit dwellings have been confirmed, and investigations are still ongoing, mainly in the Tokoro River system. It was designated as a national historic site in 1974 (Showa 49), and was designated as an additional site in 2002 (Heisei 14). Currently, they can be seen at the "Tokoro Ruins Forest and Tokoro Ruins Museum" that was developed by the former Tokoro Town in Sakaeura . To get to the "Tokoro Ruins Forest and Tokoro Ruins Museum", take the Abashiri Bus from Abashiri Station on the JR Sekihoku Main Line or other lines and get off at "Lake Saromako Sakaeura", then walk for about 2 minutes.
