The 150 years from the 1180s to the 1330s, when the samurai government existed in Kamakura, are considered to be a defining period in art history. The underlying theme of this period was the culture of the samurai in contrast to the aristocratic culture of the previous era. However, just as the Kamakura Shogunate was largely dependent on the ancient system, culture was initially Kyoto-centered, and it can be assumed that it eventually entered a period of dualism between Kyoto and Kamakura, before going on to a stage of generalization and the establishment of local culture. During this period, the tendency to face reality, which reflected the character of the samurai, greatly influenced plastic art, and realism, which seeks to depict things as they are as much as possible, became dominant.
