A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Danaidae. In Japan, it is found throughout the country from Hokkaido to the Okinawa Islands. In cold regions such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, only a few individuals are found in summer, except in exceptional cases, but these are thought to be migrants from further south or temporary outbreaks of migrants. In southwestern Japan, they often fly in swarms to mountain tops in summer. Outside of Japan, they are found from the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and China to the northwestern Himalayas. They are large, with a wingspan of about 90 to 100 millimeters. The colors and markings of the males and females are the same, but the males have a matte sex mark with black spots on both sides behind their hind wings, which makes it easy to distinguish between the males and females. In southwestern Japan, adults fly from around May to November, but in the Amami Islands and Okinawa Islands, they are often seen from autumn to spring through the winter, and are rarely seen in summer. They fly slowly and gather around a variety of flowering plants. The larvae feed on plants of the Asclepiadaceae family, such as the Japanese lantern plant, the yellow orchid, and the cherry orchid. The chestnut butterfly is the only representative of the Danaidae family native to mainland Japan north of Kyushu, but there are four more native species in the Nansei Islands south of the Tokara Islands: the Ryukyu chestnut butterfly, the white swallowtail butterfly, the black-striped white swallowtail, and the leuconoe butterfly. Many of the Danaidae butterflies migrate to Japan as vagrants from Southeast Asia, and to date, 17 species, including the brown-and-white butterfly, have been discovered in Japan, especially in the Nansei Islands. [Takashi Shiramizu] This is the only butterfly in the Danaidae family that is native to mainland Japan. The ground color of the forewings is black, and the ground color of the hindwings is brown with pale yellow markings. Wing span is 90-100mm.
