[Romanticism period]
In the 19th century, Polish romantic music developed in the context of a history of resistance and failure to the domination of three countries. Representatives of this era are Chopin, who wrote nationalistic and innovative piano music, and Moniuszko, who left behind nationalistic operas Halka (1847) and The Haunted House (1864). Among its predecessors were Jósef Antoni Franciszek Elsner (1769-1854) and Karol Kazimierz Kurpiński (1785-1857), who also worked as a conductor and educator. We also cannot ignore the virtuoso violinist Karol Józef Lipiński (1790-1861) and the female pianist Maria Agata Szymanowska (1789-1831), who left behind piano pieces such as mazurkas and polonaises.
