…An object originally carries equal amounts of positive and negative charges, but when that balance is disturbed for some reason, it becomes charged with an excess of positive or negative charges. This is called electrification, and can occur for a variety of reasons, including contact between insulators or between an insulator and a conductor (contact electrification), friction between these (friction electrification), the flow of insulating liquids or high-resistance powders through pipes (flow electrification), the crushing of solids (crushing electrification), the freezing of liquids (freezing electrification), and the ejection of liquids or powders (ejection electrification). When artificially electrifying objects for practical purposes, methods such as the bombardment of unipolar ions by corona discharge, the induction of charges by electrostatic induction, and controlled contact electrification are widely used, and for research purposes, irradiation with ultraviolet rays, X-rays, electron beams, ion beams, etc. are also used.
