For example, when we perceive a cube, we cannot see all its sides at once, so in order to be aware of it as a single cube, those sides must be synthesized. Kant called this synthesis the "synthesis of reproduction" by the imagination (Einbildungskraft). In order for this synthesis to take place, the aspects that were grasped earlier in time must be intuitively grasped until a later point in time (Critique of Pure Reason).
