German hymn poet second only to Luther. He studied theology at university and became a pastor for the first time at the age of 44. He began including his hymns in hymn collections in 1648, and in 1667 published his own "Prayer Poems" consisting of 120 poems. Many of his hymns are based on the Bible or medieval hymns, but they combine simple, easy-to-sing words with gentle content praising God and nature, and led to a shift to hymns that sing of prayer rather than confession of sin, and love for neighbor rather than personal salvation, and they remain a major work in the Evangelical Church hymn collections today.

ルターに次ぐドイツの賛美歌詩人。大学で神学を学び，44歳で初めて牧師となった。賛美歌集には1648年から採録され，67年に自作120編からなる《祈禱詩集》を出すにいたった。その多くは聖書や中世の賛歌などを典拠とするが，平易で歌いやすい言葉と，神と自然をたたえる穏やかな内容とが調和し，罪の告白よりも祈り，個人の救済よりも隣人愛を歌う賛美歌への転換を導き，今日なお福音教会賛美歌集の主要な作品となっている。
