Order Arachnida, Family Pycnonotidae. Body length 5mm. The abdomen has yellowish brown, white, and blackish brown markings on a brown background. The center of the abdomen is raised, and the front covers the rear half of the dorsal thorax. It spins a triangular web consisting of four warp threads and 8 to 20 weft threads on mountain roadsides and among shrubs. It holds still by reeling in the end of one thread pulled from the apex of the web, and when it catches prey, it flicks the thread, suddenly releases the reeled thread again, and charges forward. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Japanese name comes from the fan-shaped web.
