Bird feather standing woman folding screen
This is one of the few painted folding screens that came from the Shosoin Repository, painted in the mid-8th century. It depicts a "beauty under a tree," a painting that has been passed down from as far away as the Middle East throughout Asia, with three standing and three seated figures on six panels. Most of the feathers of animals such as pheasants that were originally affixed to the clothes have fallen off, but fortunately there has been little retouching on the facial features, and in the rich expressions one can sense the breath of Tenpyo culture, which played an important role in international artistic styles under the influence of the culture of the prosperous Tang dynasty. Preserved in the Shosoin Repository. [Sudo Hirotoshi]
