Pak Ǔn‐sik (English spelling)

Japanese: 朴殷植 - ぼくいんしょく（英語表記）Pak Ǔn‐sik

1859‐1925
Korean independence activist and scholar. His pen name was Seongchi, and his pen names were Hyeongok and Baekam. He was born in Hwangju, Hwanghae Province. He studied Confucianism and was an admirer of Jeong Yak-yong. In 1898, he participated in the founding of the Hwangseong Shinmun and became its chief editor. In 1900, he became a teacher at the Institute of Economic Studies and Hanseong Normal School. In 1905, he became chief editor of the Daehan Maeil Shinbo, and in 1906, he became a council member of the Seiyu Gakkai and chief editor of Seiyu, and a member of the Daehan Jigyanghoe, and launched a patriotic enlightenment movement. In 1908, he participated in the founding of the Northwest Society and became chief editor of the Northwest Society Monthly Report. From 1910 onwards, he placed emphasis on the study of his country's history, and wrote works such as Gaesomun Biography (1911), The Biography of Patriotic Patriot An Jung-geun, and The Painful History of Korea (both 1914), becoming a pioneer in the study of national history.

朝鮮の独立運動家，学者。字は聖七，号は謙谷，白岩。黄海道黄州に生まれる。儒学を修め，丁若鏞に心酔した。1898年《皇城新聞》創刊に参加し主筆となった。1900年には経学院，漢城師範学校の教師となった。05年《大韓毎日申報》主筆，06年西友学会評議員兼《西友》主筆，大韓自強会会員となり，愛国啓蒙運動を展開した。08年には西北学会の結成に参加し《西北学会月報》の主筆となった。10年以降，自国史研究を重視し《蓋蘇文伝》(1911)，《安重根義士伝》《韓国痛史》(ともに1914)等を著し，民族史学の開拓者となった。
