Deep clothing - Shin'i

Japanese: 深衣 - しんい

This refers to a clothing style worn by the upper classes in China since ancient times. The top (yin) and bottom (sō) are joined at the waist. Originally, Han Chinese clothing was a two-piece set with a separate robe and skirt. In the Spring and Autumn period (8th century BCE to 5th century BCE), a loose-fitting one-piece garment appeared, consisting of a wide-sleeved, hanging robe and a pleated skirt, and this was called the shenyi. The shenyi always had hemming around the collar, cuffs, and hem. The shenyi not only became the basic clothing for civil and military officials and court ladies, but also continued to be used as everyday clothing (Taoist clothing) for upper-class scholars, Confucian scholars, and Taoist priests until later times.

古代から中国の上流階級で行われていた衣服様式をいう。上衣(衣)と下衣(裳)を腰の部分でつなげたもの。漢民族の衣服は元来，衣と裳が分離した二部式であった。春秋時代(前8世紀～前5世紀)に入ると，広袖垂領の短衣にひだつきの裳をつないだ一部式のゆったりした衣があらわれ，これを深衣と呼んだ。深衣の衿と袖口，裾回りには必ず縁どりがつけられた。深衣はその後の文武百官や宮廷婦人の祭服，朝服の基本衣となったばかりでなく，上流士人，儒者，道士などの常服(道服)として後世まで用いられた。
