…Aristotle recognized the spontaneous generation of eels, and no one denied spontaneous generation until modern times. In the 17th century, F. Redi (1629-97) experimentally denied the spontaneous generation of maggots, and the spontaneous generation of insects, which seemed possible, was subsequently denied, and in the second half of the 17th century spontaneous generation came to be considered impossible. The background to this was a view of nature that held that the order of the natural world was unchanging after God's creation of the heavens and the earth, and that the species of living things were fixed. …
