Nogi Shrine

Japanese: 乃木神社 - のぎじんじゃ

Located in Akasaka, Minato Ward, Tokyo. The deity enshrined is Nogi Maresuke no Mikoto. Nogi Shizuko no Mikoto is enshrined in the auxiliary shrine. Former prefectural shrine. General Nogi Maresuke, hero of the Russo-Japanese War, committed suicide at home with his wife Shizuko on the day of the funeral of Emperor Meiji in 1912 (Taisho 1). In 1918, Tokyo mayor Yoshiro Sakatani formed the Central Nogi Association, and in 1923, a shrine was built on land next to Nogi's residence. There are also Nogi Shrines in Yamaguchi Prefecture (Nogi's hometown), Tochigi Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, and Hokkaido. The annual festival is held on September 13th, the anniversary of his death. The treasured sword is a national important cultural property.

東京都港区赤坂に鎮座。祭神は乃木希典命(のぎまれすけのみこと)。相殿(あいどの)に乃木静子命(のぎしずこのみこと)を祀(まつ)る。旧府社。日露戦争の英雄・陸軍大将乃木希典は、1912年（大正1）明治天皇御大葬当日、静子夫人とともに自宅で自刃した。13年東京市長の阪谷芳郎は中央乃木会を結成、23年乃木邸の隣地に社殿が創建された。山口県（乃木の郷里）、栃木県、京都府、北海道にも乃木神社がある。例祭は命日の9月13日。宝物の太刀(たち)は国の重要文化財。
