Secret Inspector - Anglerfish Inspector (English: amhaeng-ǒsa)

Secret Inspector - Anglerfish Inspector (English: amhaeng-ǒsa)
The name of the special inspector appointed in the Joseon Dynasty (Yi Dynasty). Also called Ilbyeolsui and Jikji. Although they were young lower-ranking officials and not necessarily high-ranking officials, they received orders directly from the king that described the inspections, and carried out inspections of various regions with a jimoku, horse badge, and brass ruler, investigated violations of the decrees of the district and prefecture authorities, and reported directly to the king. In some cases, they also held court on behalf of local officials. The origin of the royal censorship dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, but the name of the secret royal censor was created during the Joseon Dynasty. Due to the nature of their duties, the secret royal censorship was sometimes caught up in factional strife in the later period, but the system continued until the end of the Joseon Dynasty, under King Gojong (→ King Yi Tae). The activities of the secret royal censor are also recorded in the famous "Chunhyangjeon."
