A type of tone in ancient Greek music theory that includes intervals of less than a semitone, so-called quarter tones. In modern usage, it is called an enharmonic equivalent, and refers to notes that are actually the same tone even though they have different names and notations, such as C sharp and D flat in the 12-tone equal temperament system.
