Japanese: コハク(琥珀) - こはく

Fossilized plant resin. Known from the Jurassic to Quaternary periods, but mainly mined from Tertiary strata. Generally yellow to brown, transparent or translucent, with a hardness of 2-2.5, specific gravity of 1.05-1.10, and melting point of 250-400°C, it is amorphous and granular, with a greasy sheen. Soluble in organic solvents. Good electrical insulation, and becomes negatively charged when rubbed. High-quality amber is used for accessories, pipes, and other crafts. It is also used as paint (varnish). It occasionally contains insect fossils, and is highly valued as "insect-containing amber."

植物の樹脂が化石化したもの。ジュラ紀から第四紀まで知られているが，主として第三紀の地層から産出。一般に黄色〜褐色，透明ないし半透明，硬度２〜2.5，比重1.05〜1.10，融点250〜400℃の非晶質塊状または粒状で脂肪光沢を有する。有機溶剤に可溶。電気絶縁性がよく，摩擦すると負電気を帯びる。上質のものはアクセサリー，パイプなどの細工物として利用。塗料（ワニス）としても用いられる。まれに昆虫化石などを含むことがあり，虫入りコハクとよばれて珍重されている。
