Fossilized plant resin. Known from the Jurassic to Quaternary periods, but mainly mined from Tertiary strata. Generally yellow to brown, transparent or translucent, with a hardness of 2-2.5, specific gravity of 1.05-1.10, and melting point of 250-400°C, it is amorphous and granular, with a greasy sheen. Soluble in organic solvents. Good electrical insulation, and becomes negatively charged when rubbed. High-quality amber is used for accessories, pipes, and other crafts. It is also used as paint (varnish). It occasionally contains insect fossils, and is highly valued as "insect-containing amber." Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
