Native to Southeast Asia, it has now spread to tropical regions. Plantation cultivation of fruit varieties is widespread, but it is also an important staple crop, as exemplified by the cooking banana (illustration). Large leaves spread out in all directions from the top of the pseudostem, which is 1.5 to 5 meters tall and has overlapping leaf stalks.
