Izumo Oyashirokyo

Japanese:
Izumo Oyashirokyo

A Shinto sect. One of the thirteen Shinto sects of the old Shinto sect. It began in January 1873 (Meiji 6) when Senge Takatomi organized the Izumo Taisha Keishinko based on the ancient faith in Izumo Taisha under the religious policy of the Meiji government. In September of the same year, it was renamed Izumo Church, and in 1876, Izumo Taisha Church. In May 1882, it became independent from the Shinto Secretariat as the Shinto Taisha sect, and in November of the same year, it was renamed Shinto Taishakyo. After World War II, it was renamed Izumo Taishakyo in 1946 (Showa 21), and again Izumo Taishakyo in 1951, and has remained so to this day.

The religion worships Okuninushi-no-Kami as its chief deity, and the Three Creator Gods (Ame-no-Minakanushi-no-Kami, Takamimusubi-no-Kami, Kamimusubi-no-Kami), Amaterasu-Omikami, and Ubusunagami. The founder of the religion is said to be the mythical figure Amenohohi-no-Mikoto, but in reality, it was Senge Takafuku, who organized the sect. His works, "Kyoi Daiyo," "Daido Yogi," and "Daido Mondo," are considered to be its scriptures.

Its teachings preach the principle of the unity of the visible and the invisible, and aim to bring happiness in the visible world and glory in the invisible world, but in reality they are inseparable from faith in Izumo Taisha. Some of the churches belonging to the sect are quite independent, and their activities are diverse. It has followers mainly in the Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu regions. Its headquarters are in Taisha-cho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. There are 227 churches, 8,297 teachers, and 1,259,313 followers (Religious Yearbook, 2005 edition).
