…He studied medicine in various places and became a physician to the court of his native country, but during that time he became familiar with the works of mystics such as Tauler and Boehme, and was rejected by the strict Protestant faction, and converted to Catholicism in 1653. Following the example of Daniel von Czepko (1605-60), who applied Opitz's poetics to religious poetry, he wrote a collection of epigrams, "The Cherubin Wanderer" (1675), consisting of two lines of Alexandriner verse, in which his religious suffering, his experience of God through his confession of faith, and the unity of the mind with God are expressed simply and beautifully, along with mystical and natural philosophical ideas. His collection of poems, "The Joy of the Holy Soul" (1657), which praises Jesus from a Catholic standpoint in the form of a shepherd, and 55 Protestant polemics had a great influence on Pietist poets, but were forgotten until they were rediscovered by the Romantics. …
