Kiosk (English)

Japanese: キオスク(英語表記)kiosk
Kiosk (English)
(1) An architectural term derived from the Turkish word kiūshk. An open gazebo-like structure supported by thin pillars and used as a summer house in the Middle East, such as Turkey and Iran. It is also commonly used to refer to the simple small buildings commonly seen in Europe used as shops or information desks in parks, zoos, and event venues, as well as newspaper and magazine kiosks in train stations and on the streets.
(2) The name of the convenience store located in each JR station. In 1973, when the Railway Kousaikai was deciding on nicknames for station stores, it adopted the words "clean" and "easy" as in (1) and pronounced and written as "kiosk." JR affiliates operate these stores in their respective regions. In 2007, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East Japan) changed the pronunciation to kiosk and the spelling to KIOSK.
