…In 1888, A. Nobel of Sweden mixed nitrocellulose with about 12% nitrogen and nitroglycerin, kneaded and molded it to create a smokeless powder, which he called Ballistite. In 1889, F. Abel of England kneaded a mixture of nitrocellulose with more than 13% nitrogen and nitroglycerin with acetone, molded it, and evaporated the solvent to create a smokeless powder, which he named Cordite. Ballistite and cordite became the prototypes of today's double-base smokeless powder. …
