Foreign terms equivalent to Japanese folk tales include Volksmärchen (German), conte populaire (French), folktale (English), and folklore (Chinese). In Japan, formal folk tales with human protagonists are called "honkaku mukashibanashi" (real folk tales), which follows the European academic term "Eigentliches Märchen" (German) and "ordinary folktale" (English) for folk tales with the main theme of rescue from magic. However, in German and English, these terms are centered on the confrontation between magic and humans, with the protagonist rescuing the bewitched person and marrying them, or with all siblings returning safely to their parents, whereas in Japanese honkaku mukashibanashi, there is no such magic, and therefore no rescue from magic or marriage, so strictly speaking, honkaku mukashibanashi cannot be a translation of the above German and English terms.

【昔話の構造と機能】
　日本の昔話に相当する外国の用語としては，フォルクスメールヒェンVolksmärchen(ドイツ語)，コント･ポピュレールconte populaire(フランス語)，フォークテールfolktale(英語)，民間故事(中国語)などがある。様式の整った，人間を主人公とする昔話を日本では特に〈本格昔話〉というが，これは，ヨーロッパの学術用語として，魔法からの救済を主題とする昔話をEigentliches Märchen(ドイツ語)，ordinary folktale(英語)とよぶことにならったものである。ところが，独･英のこの用語は，魔法にかけられた者を主人公が救済して，結婚する，あるいは，兄弟そろって無事親もとへ帰るなど，魔法と人間との対決が話の中心を形成しているのに対し，日本の本格昔話にはそのような魔法はなく，したがって魔法からの救済と結婚がないので，厳密にいえば，本格昔話は上の独･英の用語の訳語とはなりえない。…
