...The revolt was quickly put down by the United States military, but this incident marked the beginning of clear action to demand the return of the Panama Canal Zone. The government led by Arnulfo Arias (1901- ), established in 1931, began negotiations for a complete revision of the 1903 Treaty. In 1936, the Treaty of Jal-Alfaro confirmed to the United States that sovereignty over the Panama Canal Zone belonged to Panama.
