Conder, C.

…A painter from the period of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Impressionism was Louis Buvelot (1814-88). During the first cultural upsurge in the 1890s, when cultural nationalism emphasizing the indigenous ethos of Australia rose to prominence, the Heidelberg School, consisting of Tom Roberts (1856-1931), Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917), Arthur Streeton (1867-1943), David Davies (1862-1939), and Charles Conder (1868-1909), refined the Impressionist style in an Australian style, and became the mainstream of the art world thereafter. On the other hand, the Aboriginal painter Namatjira, who learned Western watercolor painting techniques, introduced the indigenous sensibility of Aboriginal people that dates back 40,000 years to white Australians, becoming a pioneer of Aboriginal painters.
