A seafloor rise with a relatively small summit and a height (relative elevation) from base to summit of less than 1,000 meters. It differs from a seamount only in the relative elevation, not in origin or structure. In the deep sea, knolls with a relative elevation of around 300 meters and a diameter of several kilometers are often found in large numbers over a wide area. These are called deep-sea knolls, and the area they cover is called a deep-sea knoll region, and are one of the most representative deep-sea underwater topography.
