In November 1818, JF Encke was the first to calculate the orbit of a small comet discovered by JL Pons using CF Gauss's method, and discovered that it revolved around the Sun with a period of approximately 3.3 years. He pointed out that the orbits of three comets that appeared in 1786, 1795, and 1805 were similar, and that the intervals between their appearances were integer multiples of 3.3 years, and that these four comets were the same celestial body. This was observed again in 1822, proving Encke's prediction to be correct, and it was revealed that there were short-period comets in the solar system.
