[Terrain]
A province in south-central China. It is called Zhejiang for short. Its area is about 102,000 ^km2 . Its population is 43.43 million (1996). 80% of the province is mountainous, with the largest plains being the coast of Hangzhou Bay in the north (the Zhejiang North Plain) and the basin (the Jinqu Basin) that opens up in the middle reaches of the Qiantang River. The rest are small basins formed in the mountains by tributaries of the Qiantang River, the Lingjiang River, the Oujiang River, and other rivers, and small plains formed in the inner bays of the coast. The mountainous region includes the Tianmu Mountains to the west of the Qiantang River, which form the border with Anhui Province. To the east, Mount Kuaiji, Mount Tiantai, Mount Xianxialing, Mount Guocang, and Mount Yandang run from southwest to northeast, forming the border with Fujian. …

In the second year of the Zhenming era (916) during the Later Liang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties, the Japanese monk Egaku enshrined a statue of Kannon here on his way home from Mount Wutai and built a temple, which attracted people's faith and made it one of the four great mountains for Chinese Buddhists as a sacred place of Kannon. It consists of a group of Buddhist temples on the front and back mountains, with the main temples being Puji Temple on the front mountain and Fayu Temple on the back mountain, and it is also famous as a summer resort for sightseeing. ...
