…It was formed at the Berlin Workers' Congress (August 23rd to September 3rd, 1848). The central committee, centered around the typesetter Stephan Born (1824-98), was based in Leipzig, and published the journal Fraternity (October 3rd, 1848 to June 29th, 1850, published twice a week). Its main members were the "artisan workers" who had the skills to do handicrafts but were essentially becoming wage laborers, and its activities focused on organizing workers as "owners of labor," recognizing their participation in politics, and developing various self-help activities (adjusting labor-management relations, production cooperatives, joint purchasing associations, health associations, etc.). …
