… An adhesive is a substance that is placed between objects for the purpose of adhesion. First, adhesives have the property of adhering to the adherend, and second, they cohere and resist deformation and destruction. Therefore, failure of an adhesive formed using an adhesive can occur at the interface between the adhesive and the adherend (or adhesive failure), or within the adhesive layer, called cohesive failure. Also, when the adhesion is so strong that the adherend itself breaks, this is called cohesive failure of the adherend (adherend failure), but it is sometimes called material failure. …
