Order: Even-toed ungulate; family: Bovidae. In America, the term buffalo generally refers to this species. It can grow up to 3m in length, 1.8m in height, and weigh up to 1.5t. Its coat is black-brown, with longer hair on the shoulders and chest. It is herbivorous. Tens of millions of buffalo once inhabited the grasslands of North America, but their numbers have decreased due to overhunting. At one time, there were fears that they were on the buffalo's way to extinction, but they are now protected and that is no longer a concern.
