…Most brachiopods are sessile, epiphytic creatures that live by attaching themselves to rocks or other organisms using stalks, spines, and abdominal shells, but some lose their stalks and lie freely on the sea floor. Some members of the Productus genus , which flourished toward the end of the Paleozoic era, are thought to have attached their shells tightly to rocks like oysters, while members of the Chonetes genus, which lived in the seas of the same time, have thin, uneven shells that are thought to move by closing their shells instantly and ejecting a current of water like scallops. On the other hand, there are very rare endogenous creatures, such as the scallop, that live by digging holes in the shallows of sandy, muddy inland seas. …
