Land used primarily for grazing livestock or for harvesting forage grasses. Grassland is the part of ecological grassland that is primarily used for livestock farming, but it can be divided into grazing land and meadow land. Grassland was previously often called pastureland. In terms of administrative classification, the Agricultural Land Act defines meadow land as land other than farmland that is primarily used for harvesting grass for farming or livestock farming or for grazing livestock.

おもに家畜の放牧，または飼料草類の採取に利用される土地。草地は生態学上の草原のうち，おもに畜産に利用されているところをいうが，利用上の区分として放牧 (草) 地と採草地に分けられる。草地は以前は牧野 (ぼくや) と呼ばれることが多かった。なお行政上の区分としては，農地法では，農地以外の土地で，主として耕作または養畜の事業のための採草または家畜の放牧の目的に供されるものを採草放牧地としている。
