Motoko Hani - Motoko Hani

Japanese:
Motoko Hani - Motoko Hani

Educator. Born in Aomori Prefecture on September 8, 1873. Her real name was Moto Hani (maiden name Matsuoka). She studied at Meiji Girls' School (Tokyo) and worked as a teacher in her hometown before joining the Hochi Shimbun newspaper and becoming Japan's first female journalist. In 1901 (Meiji 34), she married Yoshiichi Hani (1880-1955). Together, the couple launched the magazine Katei no Tomo (Friend of the House) in 1903 (renamed Fujin no Tomo in 1908), which focused on raising awareness of issues such as the rationalization of family life and education. Later, thinking that "Fujin no Tomo's advocacy on educational issues had to be realized through the establishment of a school," she founded Jiyu Gakuen in 1921 (Taisho 10). In this educational facility, which was not subject to the Ministry of Education's ordinance, they attempted to develop and practice a "living" education based on daily life, with the goal of "creating truly free people." Aiming to combine Christianity and liberalism, she spoke out proactively about the modernization of life, rationalization, education, and women's lifestyles, and her thoughts are collected in her collected works. She passed away on April 7, 1957.
