...He was a vitalist, and is said to be one of the three great masters of systematic medicine, along with F. Hoffmann, a mechanist, and H. Boerhaave, a physico-chemical eclecticist. According to his animism (mind theory), the anima is the source of all life phenomena, such as sensation, movement, nutritional intake, and excretion, and illness is the reaction of the anima to external harmful elements, and his treatment policy was to supplement this power. His main work was Theoria medica vera (1708), and animism sparked the vitalism movement in the late 18th century.
