...An ancient city in the eastern part of Bihar, northeastern India. Population 253,000 (1991). Located on the south bank of the Ganges River. Champanagara, about 7km from the western outskirts, is said to be the remains of Champa, the capital of Ang, one of the sixteen great kingdoms that flourished in northern India around 600 B.C. Even during the time of Buddha, after its occupation by the Magadha Kingdom, it flourished as one of the six great cities of India. Xuanzang visited here in the first half of the 7th century and wrote about it in the Records of the Western Regions of the Great Tang Dynasty as the country of Zhanbo. ...

…Most of the stone carvings are made of black basalt, and the dense quality of the stone allows for intricate workmanship. Bronze statues were also produced in Nalanda and Kurkihar, and a standing Buddha statue measuring approximately 230cm in height was excavated from Sultāngañj. Painting remains include miniature paintings that serve as illustrations for Buddhist scriptures.
