cereal

Japanese: cereal
cereal

...A general term for annual or biennial crops, such as rice, wheat, and corn, that are cultivated for the purpose of harvesting their seeds, and the seeds themselves. The seeds are high in calories and can be used as a staple food or a substitute for staple foods. Grains also have good storage properties and are resistant to physical shock. This allows them to be transported long distances and cultivated in areas far from where they are consumed. They can also be cultivated on a large scale with the introduction of agricultural machinery, making production costs relatively low.
[kinds]
Among grains, those that are used as staple foods are called staple grains, and the rest are called miscellaneous grains.

From [Cereal]

…Originally it referred to wheat, barley, oats, corn and other grains, but nowadays it often refers to processed foods that are eaten as is or after simple cooking. Oatmeal and corn flakes are typical examples, and there are also puffed corn, puffed wheat and puffed rice, which are made from corn, wheat and rice. All of these are usually fortified with vitamins and minerals and are eaten boiled or with milk. [Yuichiro Hirano]…

From [Wheat]

…On the other hand, it is said that if you sow wheat straw, you will be poor for seven generations, which shows how important wheat was. [Yoshiharu Iijima]
[Wheat as a symbol]
Just as the English word cereal, which is a general term for rice and wheat, originates from the ancient Roman goddess of fertility, Ceres, ancient Western grains, especially wheat, were considered blessings from the earth spirit or mother goddess. Thus, wheat is a symbol of the harvest, and was possessed by Ceres, as well as by the Greek goddess Demeter, Artemis, and Egyptian Isis.
