…In records from the Tang dynasty onwards, ashibushi, also known as hoof shibushi or wood shibushi, is a method of shoeing developed in the desert regions of Central Asia, and in ancient times, horseshoes were mainly made of wood. The method of fitting them is described in the Records of the Journeys of the Country of Uten (c. 942) by Gao Juxi, a court official of the Later Jin dynasty of the Five Dynasties, and it is clear that they were a type of horseshoe with holes drilled in the hooves and fastened with string. Muhammad bin Muhammad wrote the Book of Horses (established after the 15th century) in Western Asia, where he provided some explanations on shoeing techniques, but full-scale horseshoes did not become widespread in East Asia until Europeans introduced shoeing techniques. …
