A ballet company based in New York. Founded in the fall of 1939 by Lucia Chase and Richard Pleasant, the group was made up of the remnants of the Mordkin Ballet, founded in 1937. Initially called simply "Ballet Theatre," the company held its inaugural four-week run at Radio City Center in New York in January 1940. It performed 21 repertoire pieces with 11 choreographers and 85 dancers, including Fokine's Les Sylphides, Mikhail M. Mordkin's Voices of Spring, and Anton Dolin's Quintet.
