Pony - Poney (English spelling)

An animal of the order Perissodactyla of the class Mammalia, family Equidae. It is a general term for small horses in the same family, not a breed name. In Britain, it refers to horses with a height of 1.48 meters or less. They have a strong constitution, muscular and firm, somewhat large heads, small and erect ears, thick necks and large bellies. They have a somewhat long back and lumbar region and slender legs, but dense and strong bones. They have a lot of hair on their foreheads, manes and tails, giving them a rough appearance. Ponies are smarter than other horses, and can be mischievous and stubborn at times, but because they are affectionate and friendly, they have become part of the family in many British homes and have been bred as faithful and safe riding horses for boys and girls. There are many ponies in Britain. In England, there are the Exmoor pony, Dartmoor pony, New Forest pony, Fell pony, and Dale pony, which are descendants of the Celt horse and are less than 1.25 meters tall. The Dartmoor pony in particular has been bred as a riding horse for boys and girls. Wales produces the Welsh Mountain pony, the oldest native horse in the UK, which is divided into three types, of which the Welsh pony is less than 1.35 meters tall and is bred as a riding horse for boys and girls. The Hackney pony is a light draft horse that is a smaller version of the Hackney, with a height of 1.25 to 1.44 meters, and is a mix of the draft horse types of the Fell pony and the Welsh Mountain pony, which have been bred to be smaller. In Scotland, there are the Highland ponies, which are 1.35 to 1.45 meters tall, and the Shetland ponies, which are native horses from the northern islands and are about 1 meter tall. The latter are strong and are exported all over the world as riding horses for boys and girls, and as draft horses for walking. In Ireland, Connemara is produced. There are also polo ponies, which are riding horses for polo, but they have a lot of thoroughbred blood mixed in and their body shapes vary, so they cannot be called true ponies.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱奇蹄(きてい)目ウマ科の動物。同科の1種ウマのうち、小格なものをさす総称名で、品種名ではない。イギリスでは体高1.48メートル以下のものをいう。体質は強健で、筋肉質で引き締まり、頭はやや大きく、耳は小さく立ち、頸(くび)は厚く腹は大きい。背腰はやや長く肢(あし)は細いが、骨は緻密(ちみつ)でじょうぶである。前がみ、たてがみ、尾毛は多く、粗野な感じを受ける。ポニーは他のウマより賢く、ちゃめっ気があり、頑固な点もあるが、情が深く人によくなれ親しむので、イギリスの多くの家庭で家族の一員となり、少年・少女の忠実で安全な乗馬として飼育されてきた。イギリスには多くのポニーがある。イングランドには、エクスムアポニー、ダートムアポニー、ニューフォレストポニー、フェルポニー、デールポニーなどがあり、それらはケルトウマの子孫で、体高1.25メートル以下。とくにダートムアポニーは少年・少女の乗馬として改良されている。ウェールズにはウェルシュマウンテンポニーが生産されている。これはイギリス最古の土産馬で3種に分けられるが、そのうちウェルシュポニーは体高1.35メートル以下で、少年・少女の乗馬として生産されている。ハクニーポニーは、ハクニーを小形にした体高1.25～1.44メートルの軽輓馬(ばんば)で、フェルポニーとウェルシュマウンテンポニーの輓馬型のものを混じて小格化された。スコットランドには、体高1.35～1.45メートルのハイランドポニーと、北方の島の土産馬で体高1メートル程度のシェトランドポニーが生産される。後者は力が強く、少年・少女の乗馬、遊歩用輓馬として世界各地に輸出されている。アイルランドには、コネマラが生産されている。そのほか、ポロポニーとよぶポロ用の乗馬があるが、サラブレッドの血液が多く混じっており、体型もまちまちで、本当のポニーといえないものである。
