Japanese: アテン（英語表記）Aten

The ancient Egyptian sun god. Also called Aton. Originally the name referred to the celestial body, the sun (sun disk), but during the New Kingdom, he was deified as one of the sun gods, and through Akhenaten's religious reforms, he was made the sole god who created the universe, maintained its order, and bestowed life on all things, replacing the previous state god Amun. His long official name, announcing the return of the highly revered Egyptian sun god of Heliopolis as Aten, is enclosed in the same cartouche as the royal name to indicate Aten's status as king of the gods.
