A royal monastery and palace located about 50 km northwest of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It represents the completion of Spanish Renaissance architecture and is a major monument during the reign of Philip II, who was the standard-bearer of the Counter-Reformation. It is dedicated to Saint Laurentius (San Lorenzo) and its official name is the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. In 1563, Philip II ordered the construction of the monastery to be carried out by Juan Bautista de Toledo (?-1567), who was the second architect of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. After his death, Juan de Herrera (1530-97) took over and completed it in 1585. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
