…In 1576, a second election for a king was held, and two kings were elected: Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg and Prince Stefan Batory of Transylvania (1533-86). Maximilian's sudden death prevented a civil war, and Batory, who was recommended by Zamojski, took the throne. (Actually, Zygmunt August's sister, Anna Jagiellonka, was chosen as queen, and her husband was recognized as king.)
