A town in Sanbu County, in the middle of the Kujukuri Plain, in central Chiba Prefecture. Katakai, the town's center, was one of Japan's leading sardine fishing areas. The town produces rice, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants. It is also popular for processing sardines into mirin-boshi (sweet sake with sake marinated in soy sauce) and mezazi (sardine dried with sake marinated in soy sauce).
